Bottomline

Most consumers want simplicity when it comes to making decisions about what skincare products they should use.

The Rodan + Fields marketing strategy is to make it simple. They eliminate the confusion about what products work together by creating streamlined, prepackaged product groups, each aimed at specific skin-care concerns.

Each product group is enclosed in a clever, take-along parcel that is the skin-care equivalent of a sack lunch. (Products are also available separately for those who want to customize their routine or add products outside the predetermined routines.)

This structured approach has merit, but, each routine has at least one questionable or lackluster formulation, or a problem with packaging.

R+F does have a few offerings that stray from the usual list of ingredients, which Dr. Schueller finds intriguing. For example, the active ingredient in the Unblemish Acne Wash is sulfur instead of the more commonly used salicylic acid.

Best Products

i. Rodan + Fields SOOTHE Mineral Sunscreen

One of the best sunscreens on the market. The presence of zinc oxide as the main active ingredient provides the maximum power-punch against UVA and UVB rays, while support is provided by the addition of titanium dioxide. And Zinc Oxide is better than titanium oxide. (Skin Pharmacology and Physiology, 2005)

ii. Rodan + Fields AMP MD Microexfoliating Roller + AMP It Up Special

The Rodan + Fields Anti-Age AMP MD system features both retinol and peptides in effective concentrations, while the roller helps these ingredients penetrate the skin, where they are needed to work.

Myristoyl tetrapeptide-8 is recommended to increase collagen production and firm the skin.

iii. Rodan + Fields REDEFINE Pore-Minimizing Toner

The secret to this product is Lactobionic acid which sets itself apart by being gentler and more effective than other AHAs. It is more hydrating than glycolic acid.

In 2010, researchers in London, Serbia, and Slovenia compared the efficacy of 6% lactobionic acid and 6% glycolic acid in a gel and an emulsion. Twenty-six volunteers applied one of the four different formulations twice daily for two weeks.

The lactobionic acid was better tolerated than glycolic acid in both forms, with similar results (Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, 2010). Considering glycolic acid is proven to refine fine lines and wrinkles, hydrate the skin, and renew collagen to firm skin over time, this is an exciting finding!

In addition, lactobionic acid also has been found to brighten the skin with time. In the same study, it was noted that the melanin index was significantly reduced with lactobionic acid use. However, the researchers noted this finding would need further investigation.

Worst products

i. Rodan + Fields REVERSE Regimen for Brown Spots, Dullness, and Discoloration

In other products, there are some really great ingredients against hyperpigmentation (i.e., brown spots, dullness, and discoloration). I consider these to be “top tier”:

Hydroquinone in concentrations of 2-4% (for light skin tones only)
Retinol in concentrations of 0.5 or higher OR glycolic acid at 15% or higher
Vitamin C as L-ascorbic acid in concentrations of 15% or higher, especially when complemented by vitamin E
Lumixyl (peptide) at 2-4%
Niacinamide at 4-5%

Then there are ingredients that are ‘just OK’ at treating hyperpigmentation. I wouldn’t use these alone, but would use these to enhance the action of the superstars listed above:

• Kojic acid
• Azelaic acid
• Resorcinol (not to be used with hydroquinone)
• Salicylic acid

There are not a lot of the “Tier 1” superstars against hyperpigmentation in the REVERSE line, nor are these ingredients in the concentrations needed to get rid of pesky age spots and discoloration.

ii. Rodan + Fields UNBLEMISH Acne Benzoyl Peroxide Treatment

Difference between premium medical grade skin care vs cheap OTC products

This article on Radianceskintherapy.com explains why premium medical grade skin care products like Rodan & Fields , Arbonne etc, are more expansive and why their results are far more superior than cheap OTC alternatives:

1. Medical grade skincare products have the highest concentrations of active ingredients. This is why they are higher priced then OTC. For example, when you buy a salicylic product that is designed for acne-prone skin, the most active ingredient in that product will be the salicylic acid and not a bunch of fillers. When you buy OTC, it may have a very small percentage of the ingredient that will help your skin and the other 90% is filler and water.

   So you may think you are getting a steal when you buy a $13 Clean & Clear acne cream, but really, you are basically paying $13 for water. That’s some pricey water!! I would personally rather spend more money on a product that will actually work on my skin and give me the best outcome!

2. Unlike OTC products that are only approved to treat the most surface layer of the skin, medical grade products are able to reach deeper layers of the skin because they are designed and formulated by doctors and scientists. I don’t know about you, but if I were struggling with acne, aging skin, rosacea, melasma, or what have you, I would rather be spending money on products that will treat my skin concern on the deepest level.

3. If you buy your skincare products from Sephora, you may be getting decent products, but the efficacy of the products and the way the ingredients work with the pH of your skin may not be known by the sales associate. Dealing with an experienced dermatologist or even a Rodan&Fields consultant might be a better option.

However, the problem with buying Rodan & Fields, Arbonne, Mary Kay, etc is that if you buy your skincare products from a direct sales consultant like Rodan & Fields, Arbonne, Mary Kay, etc, you also may be getting products that will do something to your skin, but the simple fact that a lot of times these people selling the products did NOT go to school for skin, they do NOT know how the ingredients of the products will react with each specific skin type or pH, and they also do not know how the ingredients will react with your skin because, usually, their main profession is not in skincare/aesthetician.

This expert review on Beautypedia.com explains that even though the Rodan & Fields Redefine MultiFuntional eye cream formula includes several antioxidants to help improve the appearance of wrinkles, but once the jar is opened and the ingredients get in contact with air which gets trapped inside the jar, these ingredients begin to breakdown.

Ultimately, that’s wasting the anti-aging power you’re paying good money for, and that’s a shame, considering this fragrance-free eye cream contains skin-replenishing ingredients and a handful of peptides that can reduce signs of aging.

All plant extracts, almost all vitamins, antioxidants, and other state-of-the-art ingredients begin to break down in the presence of air. Therefore, once a jar is opened and lets the air in, these important ingredients begin to deteriorate, becoming less and less effective.

Routine exposure to daylight can also be problematic for maintaining ingredient stability.

Pros:

Fragrance-free cream works well to hydrate the eye area.

Cons:

• Jar packaging allows the anti-aging ingredients to begin breaking down from the first use.
• Not likely to help dramatically with dark circles and undereye puffiness as claimed.

This article on Truthinaging.com written by expert Marta does not recommend dermarolling as a safe and effective methodology for better looking skin and thus does not recommend Rodan & Fields Amp MD.

Apart from that, she also says that the serum that comes with this dermaroller contains two silicones, which can be toxic to the skin. Although she praises inclusion of Myristoyl pentapeptide-8, a collagen boosting peptide in the serum.

“Now, if I was to submit to dermarolling, I’d want to follow up with a really good serum and I certainly wouldn’t want anything nasty in it that that my punctured skin would be receptive to. The serum that Rodan + Fields sells with Anti-Age Amp MD kit has as its very first ingredient one that may cause mild skin irritation, cyclopentasiloxane, a silicone. Generally, silicone molecules are too large to enter the surface of the skin and, as is the case with cyclopentasiloxane (in vitro tests show that less than 2% penetrates the skin). But what of skin that has been subjected to Amp MD? Unfortunately, silicone, when it enters the body, can be toxic, according to the Journal of Toxicology and other sources.

The second ingredient is another silicone. Cosmetic Ingredient review (CIR) Expert Panel reviewed the data surrounding dimethicone, and assessed it as safe to use in personal care products. They determined that because of the large molecular weight of silicone based polymers such as dimethicone, it would be very unlikely for it to penetrate past the surface of the skin. Unfortunately, we don’t know if that assessment would apply to dermarolled skin.”

This is a truly extraordinary product, and I will need a replacement tube soon!

Directions: Wet fingertips and massage a quarter-sized amount of product onto dry skin. Cover the entire face with a thin coat of product, avoiding contact with eyes. REDEFINE Pore Minimizing Toner is a very gentle non-stripping toner that leaves skin feeling balanced, hydrated, soft and supple. It is so gentle that I have used it mid day, in lieu of a cleansing water, to remove sweat and dirt after a long day of physical exertion.

After cleansing, apply evenly to entire face and neck with a fresh gauze pad, avoiding the eye area. Do not rinse off. Allow to dry. Use morning and evening.

REDEFINE Triple Defense Treatment Broad Spectrum SPF 30 is a lightweight fast absorbing daily moisturizer that has a fresh delicate scent that dissipates quickly upon application. The sunscreen leaves behind no white cast that interferes with makeup, and it offers highly effective sun protection.

Directions: Apply a dime-sized amount over entire face and neck every morning. Avoid eye area.

REDEFINE Overnight Restorative Cream is a highly moisturizing night cream that has a thin consistency, but make no mistake about it– this is one seriously nourishing and hydrating nighttime treatment cream. I require only the smallest amount to achieve amazing results for my combination skin. I apply it to freshly cleaned slightly damp skin, and it sinks in effortlessly leaving my skin soft, hydrated, supple and balanced. I also note a distinctive and enviable luminescence to my skin that I normally only achieve with beauty oils!

Directions: Every evening, after cleansing and toning, apply a dime-sized amount evenly over the entire face, avoiding eye area.

The ACUTE CARE REDEFINE Eye Cloths can be applied to anywhere you have expression lines that you want to treat. They can be used around the eyes or the mouth, and lines are visibly diminished, and skin has a smoother texture and appearance. I have tried them during the daytime and nighttime, and the results are excellent both ways. I will say, however, the first time that I used them I was surprised to learn that there was a slightly prickly sensation as I pressed the pads into place. That sensation quickly subsided and there was no discomfort– only an interesting sensation. (Retail $220.00 for 10 pairs).

She comments on Rodan and Fields:- I was never a big fan of Proactive even in its inception. Most of my clients who used it saw a temporary reduction in acne issues that eventually returned later, sometimes worse. Most of the ingredients in Proactive can be found sold in better refined versions in doctors’ offices for nearly the same price so spend your acne dollars better and consult a professional. In regards to their anti-aging line, it’s fairly decent but incredibly expensive. The product quality is fair but is not highly effective and certainly not worth the expense. The majority of my clients who have tried this line ended up only using it for awhile, finding it not very effective and yet very pricey.

Comments on Arbonne:- Arbonne is not the worst product in the world to use on your skin. If you are someone who has traditionally used products from Target and Walgreens, you will likely notice an improvement in your skin while using Arbonne. Quite frankly, I absolutely LOVE their body scrub, Awaken Sea Salt Scrub. But the main RE9 skincare product is VERY expensive ($323 for the starter set) and quite frankly I can supply you with more-effective, pharmaceutical grade products for the same price, probably even less

Avon:- . I do like the way “Skin So Soft” keeps the bugs away, I’d take it over Off any day. I’m someone who only uses essential oil based perfumes so I find their scents to smell very chemically to me. But if you take the snob out of me I do find that once again I would choose this line over products at Walgreens or Walmart pretty much any day. Their price point is hard to beat as well, I can’t come close to beating their prices.

Jeunesse:– I find the products to be effective. There is NOTHING on the market like Instantly Ageless, it’s application is tricky to master but once you do, it’s pretty amazing. I’m also quite fond of their Luminesce Cellular Serum, it’s a quality stem cell product that can help many skin types. If they created better avenues to sell the product I would stick with the organization.

Mary Kay:- I hate to say bad things about a company that does good things but this is my brutal assessment! The TimeWise line has the types of ingredients that should create aging benefits but unfortunately I don’t see it in the results. I think perhaps they aren’t as potent as some of it’s competitors, regardless, I can’t get excited about a product that seems not to work. Sorry Mary Kay fans!!

Nerium:- To me, it doesn’t seem like a great idea to put a poisonous flower on your skin every day. But after great reassurances from the rep that it was safe, I tried it myself, giving it the 30 day test on my own skin. I saw virtually no change in tightness, pigment or anything else. I did see an ever so slight reduction in hormonal acne but nothing else. Even on the auto ship program, it’s $80 per month which is ridiculously expensive for the result. I know this is one your neighbor has been begging you to try but I would take a pass.

i. Instant wrinkle reducer

I used the whole product line for 3 months. One month – no change – second month, glowing skin – Wow! -the third month seriously irritated red skin, with huge acne breakouts. The glow was gone, all I had was irritated, dry skin. I went back to my organic line to no miracles but really soft, smooth skin.

I went all in on the regimen — Reverse kit, AMP roller, and macro exfoliator. It was pretty expensive but I know friends that benefited from the Proactiv line so I figured this was a good product to invest in. Not all Asians have great skin, but I was lucky to inherit my dad’s side of the family’s genes (my mom’s side has lots of wrinkles). Even so, I am obsessed with skin care and any product that will promise to brighten, lighten, and reduce pore size I am willing to try. Needless to say I have lots of skin care products.

I’m not diligent about washing my face twice a day or using the AMP roller every day or using the macro exfoliator every week–I travel weekly for work and half the time I forget to do it.

With that being said, I am in my 3rd month and see some results, but I’m sure I would see more if I did it more often. The moisturizer makes my skin really oily; I’m hoping if and when I switch to the Redefine moisturizer the oiliness will go away, otherwise it’s back to my tried and true Olay moisturizer.

Considering how expensive the kits are and all the add ons, I’m not sure I would order some of the stuff again. The cooling gels don’t really seem to do much and for the cost, I can get a 4 oz bottle of aloe vera gel for much less. I may order some of the stuff piecemeal depending on how the Redefine kit goes.

I’ve been using the entire REVERSE line for 6 months now. I have pretty good skin but I have some acne scars that have taunted me for years now. Also, I’m pretty good with sunscreen as a mixed race girl BUT I’m bad when I’m on vacation in the desert. So I’m trying to undo any unseen damage so I don’t look like a Brahmin bag when i’m 40. The line is expensive but I definitely see a difference. It’s not overnight but at around the 3 to 4 month mark, I really noticed that the acne scars had faded and even some of my freckles had. My skin looks really good on makeup free days and when I do wear makeup, I swear my skin has this lit from within look. I’d say it’s the most radiant my skin has ever looked. Once this round is done, I will most likely switch to the anti-aging line as I think REVERSE has done it’s work.

I gave it 4 lippies instead of 5 because the skin lightening treatment smells skunky. Whatever scent they use in the sunscreen should be replicated for the skin lightening treatment.

One other note: I have combination skin and the directions say to work up to using it every day, twice per day. I didn’t have any problems with this irritating my skin but I can see where it would be irritating for some. The exfoliating wash twice a day could be brutal for some.

I love Rodan and Fields – only skin care line that hasn’t left me either dried out or too oily. I only use the exfoliating wash every other day – and at night I use the redefine night serum. Love love love. I use a gentle cleaner and then the rest of the redefine line in days I don’t use the exfoliating wash!

Review 1 – R&F Unblemish is expensive and too harsh!

I’m 35 and have experienced acne my lifetime, but have suffered from quite severe adult acne for about 3 years. I tried a lot of stuff, from ProActiv to pills from a doctor. Afterward I was uncertain because of the cost, and learned about Rodan and Fields Unblemish. I determined to do it one day. It was my skin somewhat enhanced, a slow procedure, and I began getting lots of horrible blackheads, which will be something I haven’t had to deal with. It totally quit working into the regimen, and I’m really sad with the results. If you’re going to attempt this, I’d recommend trying to find a sulfur wash (that’s on Amazon), and using benzyl peroxide 5.0%, and a toner from elsewhere. It wasn’t at all worth my cash, and is quite expensive. It was definitely not for me, although I understand some folks have had lots of success with this merchandise. I also have another friend who even got blackheads like I did so, and had the identical encounter.

Review 2 – My skin had irritation after using Redefine

Used Redefine products (and micro-dermabrasion paste) for seven weeks. Eventually could not take it. My skin kept getting worse and worse. I will be 60 tomorrow – have not had acne for over 25 years, and suddenly my face appear bumpy and red – and I definitely felt ANGRY. SOMEthing appeared to be making my skin sensitive! I haven’t looked this bad since I was a teen! Quit using it now. Went back to my regimen of $10 face cream (alpha-hydroxy nighttime replenishing lotion) and neutragena cleanser and toner and already my face FEELS less irritated and seems SO much better. It is clearly causing some sort of bad reaction with my skin although I do not understand what’s in these products. For this much cash, I was hoping for miracles, I guess. But I certainly was not anticipating skin that was seriously worse than when I began!

Review 3 – Only recommend it if you have cash

WOULD I RECOMMEND R&F ANTI-AGE? Yes, with one extremely important caveat, if you’ve got the cash to spend. I adore the merchandise. I adore the line. I adore the fact that two women are supplying opportunity for other women to generate income. BUT, and that is as I said at the beginning it is expensive. It is 193.00 for a 60-day supply or around 1200.00 a year. Definitely it’s more affordable than plastic surgery (and there are people who say that is just as great) I believe that is rough for some families on a budget, particularly in the present economic scenario.

Additionally, the lumps were not like acne lumps, they were more. Nothing helped, although I attempted removing several things from my diet, believing it was possibly an allergy. I was perplexed and disappointed cause I ‘d no notion what to do about it and it actually happened. The only skincare product that gave me relief was Rodan & Fields SOOTHE.

Review 5 – REVERSE is good but I don’t like the way it is sold!

I ‘ve a problem with the way this merchandise is sold. I have been using the REVERSE application for three months. I do enjoy the fragrance and my sun spots have been reduced by it. It includes some Retinol and Vit C that’s assumed to be used jointly in pearl-sized quantities. They never come out identical, which becomes a quandary when reordering. Uneasy pressure is provided by buying through a buddy, especially if one wants to discontinue buying it or if you will find issues. The price is prohibitive, since if used correctly monthly the merchandise must be used. It takes a lengthy time to get credit for a returned merchandise (I attempted the Redefine and it was overly irritating) plus they look to make errors on the orders and it is extremely difficult to get that rectified. I might contemplate using it… if the product were available locally and simpler to return if a trouble…. and pricey I will look for other options and just cancelled my membership.

Well, like a lot of things in our lives… the first time was bad when I tried the R&F exfoliator. I had a difficult time like the video revealed getting my face in the right place and before I could get a quarter of the region completed the darn machine would beep to go forward. Fortunately, it is simple to move through the application again and complete sections that are missed. I learned fast, and I was a professional! For the first use. It’s designed to be used for multiple treatments and felt considerably better on my skin although the exfoliator point is incredibly difficult. A cooling gel is supplied to soothe the skin. I definitely wanted initially to it. The third use, my skin accustomed to the exfoliation and I totally forgot to use the gel that was soothing. Most of the places were not difficult once I had my face in the right place. The nose proved the most challenging so I ‘d lose suction regularly because it clearly is not a level place.

I think there are many good products out there, you just have to go through trial and error to find the one that works for you. I tried this as a favor to a friend who was selling it and am surprised how much I like it. I have very sensitive, reactive skin. Everything makes it red and itchy. I’ve tried so many other brands, neutrogena, Aveeno, cetaphil, ceraVe, even other pricier brands like origins, murad, la Roche posay and dermalogica, but all of them left my face feeling tight, and often red or burning. This product makes my skin feel really good and soft. I feel like I’ve just had an awesome facial after I use it. My husband even noticed how soft it was! The night cream feels so smooth and luxurious- I absolutely love it.

As far as anti-aging, eh I guess it’s average. I’ve never found that any of them actually work as well as drinking enough water, getting enough sleep, and staying out of the sun. I have used Mary Kay in the past along with a number of professional and OTC products. My skin is pretty picky so I was never able to stick with anything fit very long. Yes, it is on the pricey side, but you’re not going to find a better skincare line out there. You get what you pay for and in my opinion it’s worth it! It last for almost 3 months and you can try it for 60 days and if you don’t like it, you can send it back and get your money back. You can’t do that with store brand skincare.

Emily – Arbonne is better than R&F

I personally have tried both rodan and fields and Arbonne. I saw results from both, however my results from Arbonne have not disappeared and have only continued to get better! That is why I continued to use Arbonne skincare. I am now an Arbonne consultant.

The reason I chose to be an Arbonne consultant out all of the companies out there is

1) because these are my favorite products favorite products

2) they do NOT contain the parabens in the products which have now been linked to breast cancer

3) it does NOT contain harsh chemicals. They are all botanical based products. However, even plants have chemicals… they are simply natural chemicals and are not man made so they are pure and safe. 5) I get to travel!!!!! For example, I am going to Las Vegas through Arbonne in April!
